I had no sooner walked through the entrance of the DARE Carnival playing at the Westfield Garden State Plaza Shopping Center west parking lot than the head of the DARE program stopped me. "Mel", he said, "did you know that John Travolta was here on Monday night?".
My ears perked up, but I didn't know if Nick was pulling my leg. I walked over to the Paramus Volunteer Fire Department stand where they were serving hot dogs and drinks and asked my friend Margaret Abbamont. She didn't know but asked around the group. Someone said that he had taken his family on the Merry Go Round right around the corner.
Quickly I went around the corner where Gary, the operator confirmed it. With a broad grin, he told me that not only was this great star there with his wife, two teenagers and a bodyguard, but that Travolta had autographed a ten dollar bill for him. Tracing a little further, I ascertained that the Travolta family had also visited the Ferris Wheel. Robby, the operator corroborated Gary's story and added that he had been offered a one hundred dollar bill. He refused it settling for an autograph on his ten dollar bill. Both gentlemen had the money safely tucked away at home.
Terrie Dykes. the lady at the ticket box ,confirmed the fact that in addition to the above two rides, he had also visited the Sea Ray. Needless to say, the midway was excited to have this unassuming star on the DARE Carnival lot.
An unconfirmed rumor also had Cher visiting the midway. Very exciting.
