Album 2
Sheriff Leo P. McGuire honored 8 year old Lucy Cervino as Sheriff for a Day. A student at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in North Arlington, Lucy has been diagnosed with leukemia. McGuire started this program to help young people who have been diagnosed with an ailment. He had started this with a blind lad who had to undergo a bone cancer operation.
Sgt. John Calabrese and Sheriff's Officer Aimee Mehnert arranged to pick up Lucy, Mom Rosemary and two sisters, Gabrielle and Stephanie. They were picked up and then had breakfast with Sheriff McGuire and his Command Staff. Lucy was then sworn in as Sheriff for a Day, taken to Sears in Hackensack for a portrait before going to Overpeck Park to ride a horse.
Album 1 From there, the family was transported to North Arlington and made a triumphant entrance into the school playground where her fellow students were waiting under the aegis of Principal Larry McKeown and the faculty. Two Sheriff's motorcycles driven by Doug Lanzo and Tony Cicero pulled in to the yard followed by Calabrese, Mehnert and Rich Hamilton. They put on an impressive show for the waiting students.
Lucy was presented with a plaque and a signed softball (her favorite sport) as well as a visor and a jersey from the high school team. From there the Sheriff's group proceeded to the Justice Center in Hackensack where McGuire had bagpipes playing, gave her a plaque and a farewell.
This is a day in Lucy's life that will be remembered, a day of joy in a tiny life that has seen hardship. Sheriff McGuire, Sgt. Calabrese, Officers Aimee Mehnert, Rich Hamilton, Doug Lanzo and Tony Cicero will not forget it either.
