By Paramus Post Sunday, July 27, 2008, 07:00 PM EDT
(HACKENSACK) - Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney and the County’s Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs today announced that applications for the 2009 Bergen County History Grant Program are available. A grant workshop will be held for first-time applicants on August 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Bergen County Administration Building at One Bergen County Plaza, Room 4B in Hackensack.
“This is the only grant program in the county available to Bergen County nonprofit organizations that provides funding to local historical organizations for operating costs and projects that focus on Bergen’s history,” said McNerney. “The History Grant Program opens doors to those that are interested in preserving our county’s rich history.”
Two kinds of grants are available:
General Operating Support Grants (GOS): assist established historical organizations with operating funds of at least $4000 to assist with expenses that include, but are not limited to: salaries, contracted services, marketing and fund-raising fees, utilities, staff training, maintenance of collections, and long-term planning.
Special Project Grants (SP): support projects that contribute to the Bergen County historical record, assist and encourage the preservation of historic Bergen County, and promote local history. Projects that would be eligible include: museum exhibitions, publications, conservation of collections, archives, and historic cemeteries, as well as the preparation of National Register nominations for Bergen County historic properties, oral history projects, and the production of history films and videos.
Applications for the 2009 Bergen County History Grant Program are available to non-profit organizations based in Bergen County. Local municipalities and libraries may not apply for GOS Grants, but are eligible for SP grants. Funding must be matched by applicants on a 1:1 basis and should apply to expenses incurred from July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009.
Organizations that serve the culturally diverse local Bergen County population with projects and programs that reflect the rich history of these communities are especially encouraged to apply.
Applicants are required to first submit a Declaration of Intent to apply to the Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs by September 2, 2008. The grant application deadline is September 26, 2008.
The 2009 Bergen County History Grant Program is made possible in part by a 2008 General Operating Support Grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission, a Division of Cultural Affairs in the Department of State, and the Bergen County Department of Parks, Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs.
Grant information and forms may be obtained by calling 201-336-7267 or by visiting the Bergen County Department of Parks web site www.co.bergen.nj.us/parks and looking under “History & Preservation.”
