Englewood Hosp. & Medical Center's Hyperbaric Center marks 10th Anniversary

The Hyperbaric Center at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center marks its 10th year of operation this summer. The Center, which has administered 11,000 treatments to patients since its inception, has the distinctions of being the only institution in northern New Jersey with a fully certified staff (by the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology) and the only hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment center in the state providing full-service 24/7. It is also the only HBO program in the area to earn accreditation by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society.
Composed of “hyper,” meaning excessive, and “baric,” meaning atmospheric pressure, the term “hyperbaric” refers to excessive pressure. Because it reduces air bubbles caused by diving accidents, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO) was originally developed to treat deep-sea divers who suffer from an air embolism or the “bends.” However, HBO also increases the amount of oxygen carried to body tissue through the blood stream, making it an effective treatment for a wide range of disorders.
“Many of our patients have benefitted from hyperbaric oxygen therapy as part of a comprehensive treatment regimen,” said Aryeh Shander, MD, Chief of Anesthesiology at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, who, along with Robert Malovany, MD, directs the Hyperbaric Center. “HBO has successfully treated diabetic ulcers, hard-to-heal wounds and gangrene. It can speed healing of soft-tissue infections and surgical tissue flaps and grafts and has helped patients with carbon monoxide poisoning and traumatic crush injuries.”
