Paramus Sunrise 9/16/08
Len LoPinto, Paramus Librarian, and Donna Perkosky attended a Paramus Sunrise Rotary meeting, September 16th . Len, a Paramus Rotary member, gave an interesting talk on the advances the Paramus Library has made over the years in an ever expanding demand for books, CD's, DVD's, ESL, Children's educational area, gently read Book Sale, Bandshell offerings and art displays.
Len pointed out that they are cramped for space; storage is in unlikely places just to accommodate their clientele, but that they have to forgo some services because there is very little elbow room. Even though the computers are heavily used and have reference sources on them, the demand on library personnel has increased.
He and Donna passed out information showing how a revised Library upgrade versus new construction would compare. Charlie Reid, former Paramus Mayor and Library proponent, visited the Library from his Maine domicile and after careful study of the proposed plans, gave them his hearty approval.
In other club business, Program Chairperson Liz Mason mentioned her speaker agenda for the month and that she has programs booked through October. Pat Reilly, Aviation Hall of Fame founder and Mid-Bergen Rotary member, will be our next speaker.
President Anthony Iacono went over the planned club activities. Our picnic is scheduled for this Saturday, 9/20/08 at noon. Taking place at the IBEW Local 164 grounds (rain or shine), we are once again grateful to member Buzz Dressel for not only offering the area, but also the hot dogs and hamburgers. A nominal charge of $5.00 will offset some of the incidental expenses. Valerie Coniglio has stepped in to oversee the festivities and Val always does a super job.
Iacono stressed our busy schedule: 10/4 District river cleanup; 10/6 Multi-District Assembly at the Birchwood Manor in Parsippany ($55.00), 10/9 Visit to the Paramus Rotary Club (noon at Seasons $20.00) to greet the Group Study Exchange; 10/23 International Indian Dinner at the Taj Palace in Teaneck ($30.00 per person, $50.00 per couple. DGE Raj Bhatia has highly endorsed the restaurant.)
Not to be lagging, Paramus Sunrise Rotary is also exploring the starting of a Rotaract Club. Member Mario Sicari has agreed to lead the group. According to District Rotaract Chair Jim Castellanos, there are only three Rotaract clubs in District 7490. One is community based sponsored by Paterson, one is a NYC college based sponsored by the Paramus Rotary and the third is an e-club. Rotaract designed for 18 to 30 year old people is a Rotary International recognized organization.
