As the nation’s economic crisis ripples throughout the state, an increasing number of people are having difficulty meeting their basic needs. Rising costs for gas to get to work, coupled with high rent and utility bills are forcing families to make painful choices about other necessities like food and medicine
The County Welfare Directors Association of New Jersey and ShopRite have partnered with Essex County and the New Jersey Anti-Hunger Coalition to help eligible people receive nutrition assistance through the Food Stamp Program. “I want to thank the Board of Social Services and ShopRite for recognizing the needs of the residents of our 70 municipalities and moving promptly on our efforts to offer extra help during these challenging financial times,” said Freeholder and Chairman of the Board of Social Services James M. Carroll.
Essex County will dispatch its Mobile Citizen Services Office to selected ShopRite supermarket locations throughout Northern and Central New Jersey. Staff from the host county’s welfare office will work from the mobile office and assist clients in applying for Food Stamps and other social services for which they may be eligible.
Staff from the Bergen County Board of Social Services will be available in the Mobile Office at the Hackensack ShopRite on River Street from 10:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 28, 2008.
The state-of-the-art outreach vehicle is the size of a bus and is outfitted with a waiting room and three private offices so clients can be served in a confidential and professional manner. The mobile office is wheelchair accessible and is equipped with wireless internet connection and a fax machine so applications can be processed on site.
