IBEW Local 164 Raises $15,000 to Benefit Breast Cancer Research

Local’s Annual Project Grandma Marks Tenth Year, Having Raised Nearly $500,000 For the Fight Against Breast Cancer

To help women and their families win the battle against breast cancer, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 164 recently raised $15,000 as part of Project Grandma, an annual fund-raising project established to honor survivors and their loved ones. Since its inception ten years ago, the Local has raised nearly $500,000
Breast cancer is the most common cancer to affect women in the United States with the exclusion of skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 182,460 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and about 40,480 will die from the disease. To assist women in their fight, Local 164 has earmarked this year’s proceeds for breast cancer research and programs at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, N.J.

“Every three minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. That’s a staggering statistic,” said Richard Dressel, the Local’s business manager. “As we mark our tenth year of Project Grandma, we remain committed to increasing awareness of breast cancer through early detection, honoring survivors for their courageous fight and supporting those who are currently battling this disease as well as their family members.”

Local 164’s annual campaign includes a capital drive, special events and raffles throughout the year. In addition, the Local hosts an evening to honor breast cancer patients, survivors and their families. This year’s comedy night event included a grand prize raffle for a home theatre system with a 42” television and Wii game unit.

“Project Grandma is dear to our hearts because so many of us have experienced first-hand the enormous physical and emotional toll of this terrible disease, whether it be through a spouse, loved one or friend,” explained Barry Hammond, who serves as Local 164’s chairman of the event, along with John Nordyk, chairman emeritus. “Our annual event is as much about raising needed funds to combat breast cancer as it is about celebrating hope and what these women and their families have endured.”

Project Grandma was initially named to honor breast cancer survivors related to IBEW Local 164 members, many of whom expressed their desire to overcome the disease and live to experience the joy of grandchildren. The Local has been recognized for its funding and awareness efforts on behalf of breast cancer by numerous organizations, including the Points of Light Foundation’s President’s Service Award.
