Local Landscape Artist Wins Four NESPA Awards

The Northeast Spa & Pool Association Recognizes Innovative Approach of Cipriano Landscape Design

Ramsey-based Cipriano Landscape Design won four prestigious 2008 Northeast Spa & Pool Association (NESPA) awards on Friday, November 7, for waterfall, spa, pool and architectural projects they designed and created throughout New Jersey.
NESPA judged each pool based on the aesthetic features of the installation, which included adjacent decking, landscape or other amenities that were part of the pool environment. The water projects were further judged based on workmanship, soundness of design and safety measures installed.

Cipriano Landscape Design won a Gold Design Award for a commercial fountain created at a corporate headquarters in Mahwah, N.J. Prior to Cipriano’s work, the meeting area was a simple wooded location with a clearing and tree canopy. Using European fountains as inspiration, Cipriano blended brick and stone to transform the ordinary into a majestic work of art.

The centerpiece of the oasis was the fountain, which featured tiered pond basins, masonry piers and copper drip heads that created a variety of natural water movement up, down and around the fountain. Live, moss-covered brick was used to create an aged look, while large dry-set bluestone slabs created a walkway leading to and around the fountain. Fern masses and existing hardwood trees surrounded the masterpiece and created a “moonlit” scene.

Cipriano also won a Silver Design Award for a backyard oasis in Allendale, N.J. Prior to the renovation, the homeowners wanted to transform their current backyard into a high-end resort. Maintaining a comfort level suitable for a small family was of pertinent importance. The Cipriano team fulfilled this vision by creating an outdoor oasis featuring a luxury swimming pool with an eight-foot-high stone waterfall, a 12-person spa, a masonry cooking center and numerous sprawling gardens.

Coupled with a tropical palm tree, the backbone of the resort was evergreens layered with shrubs, perennials and trees that were set to match the season. The luxurious waterfall, accented with a 22-ton boulder to create a natural look, spills into the pool for dramatic sights and sounds. Landscape lighting and gas-powered tiki torches were installed - creating the ultimate atmosphere for guests as the sun went down.

In addition to the Gold and Silver awards, the Cipriano team also collected the Bronze Design Award for a waterfall and spa project in Mahwah, N.J. The existing backyard featured a natural wooded setting and was in need of more room for recreation and play. In addition to the award winning 10-foot-high waterfall, the team planted a variety of shrubs, trees and perennials.

The new free-form pool and waterfall creation included a swim jet area for exercise and activity and secluded spa areas for quiet relaxation and contemplation. To maintain the natural look, the Cipriano team supplemented the existing hardwood canopy with a layering of summer flowering shrubs, perennials and ornamental grasses.

Finally, Cipriano Landscape Design won a Merit Design Award for a pond and waterfall project in Saddle River, N.J. The owner, who previously contracted Cipriano for an outdoor kitchen, desired a natural water look as a backdrop for his hobby of outdoor cooking. Cipriano designed and installed a relaxing koi pond and waterfall to reinvent the backyard. Both the pond and waterfall were situated at the foot of the six-person patio.
