Bergen County Anounces Arts Field Day

Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney and County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Aaron R. Graham today announced that Arts Field Day will take place on Wednesday, December 3 at Bergen Community College in Paramus. Elementary through high school principals or assistant principles from public and parochial schools, along with teachers from their respective schools are invited to attend the sessions.
The first session is the Arts-in-Education (AIE) Workshop, which will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 11:35 a.m. It will be followed by the AIE Residency Grant Technical Workshop from 11:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Schools that attend the AIE Residency Grant Technical Workshop will be qualified to receive a free three-day mini-residency grant with an AIE roster artist in the discipline of their choice.
“Last year’s Arts Field Day was a resounding success,” said McNerney. “This year’s activities will once again explore how teachers and students benefit from having professional AIE teaching artists visit their schools through these grant residencies.”
“Emphasis is on integrating the arts into schools’ core curriculum and providing rigorous education strategies of instruction,” said Graham.
The AIE Workshop will include past AIE recipients that will relay the program’s success in their schools. It will also include hands-on interactive table discussions by AIE representatives. There will be four interactive artist workshop “break out sessions” with highly skilled AIE teaching artists. The AIE Residency Grant Technical Workshop will be run by Amanda Newman-Godfrey, an AIE Arts Education Associate for the New Jersey State Council on the Arts (NJSCA). Teachers need to fill out the state evaluation form after each session in order to receive professional development hours through the NJSCA’s AIE Consortium.
Artists and leaders from the NJSCA Partnering Agents will be present. These artists are trained to help schools prepare students for the state mandated tests. This gathering of New Jersey’s finest AIE teaching artists will demonstrate how the arts address students’ various styles of learning, resulting in a more effective delivery of the academic curriculum.
Anthony Buscetti, the facilitator of this event, is a retired “Blue Ribbon” high school administrator and one of the arts educators who developed the state’s core curriculum standards.
The workshops are free, but pre-registration is required. Attendees need to register for both sessions. Registration forms can be obtained by calling Greg Lucente in the County’s Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs at 201-336-7292 or via e-mail at glucente@co.bergen.nj.us. Registration forms are due Friday, November 21. They can be faxed to 201-336-7262. Attendees’ choices for “break out sessions” will be handled on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Arts Field Day is co-sponsored by the NJSCA, the AIE Consortium, Bergen County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs, and Bergen Community College.
