The Newark and Suburban Architects section of the AIA-NJ Announces Winners from its 15th Annual Design Competition

AIA 15th Annual Design Competition The Newark and Suburban Architects section of the American Institute of Architects New Jersey chapter recently hosted its 15th Annual Design Competition at The Newark Museum. This juried competition highlighted the best architectural work throughout northern New Jersey.
This year, Philip Kennedy-Grant, AIA, coordinated the competition. He invited three jurors to evaluate and judge entries, which included residential, commercial and institutional projects. The competition was open to all AIA Newark and Suburban members.

The panel of judges included: Milton W. Grenfell, AIA, principal of Grenfell Architecture in Washington, D.C.; Ronnette Riley, FAIA, principal of Ronnette Riley Architecture in New York City; and Samuel G. White, FAIA, partner of Platt Byard Dovell White Architects in New York City.

"I am very pleased to have organized this event for AIA Newark and Suburban," said Kennedy-Grant. "The range of experience, design qualities and range of work that was presented continues to surprise me. I can only imagine what architects will design in the coming years as we continue to surpass 'what is' and strive to 'see what can be'."

This year's winners were classified as Gold and Silver awards. They include the following:

Gold Medal
Architect: Hugh A. Boyd, FAIA
Firm: Hugh A. Boyd Architects, Montclair, N.J.
Project: Ardmore Farmers Market, Ardmore, Pa.

Silver Medal
Architect: William C. Slack, AIA, PP, LEED AP
Firm: CTS Group Architecture & Planning PA, Chatham, N.J.
Project: Weequahic High School Community Gymnasium

Architect: Philip Kennedy-Grant, AIA
Firm: Kennedy-Grant, Bernardsville, N.J.
Project: Newark School of the Arts

Architect: Philip Kennedy-Grant, AIA

Honorable Mention
