D. Misciagna, assistant business manager for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 164 and president of the Bergen County Building & Construction Trades Council, was honored by the Boys & Girls Club of Paterson and Passaic with their Service to Youth Award. The award was presented at the Club’s fifth annual “An Evening For The Kids” reception at Best Western Robert Treat Hotel in Newark.
“Thom Misciagna is a man who has been committed to making the world a better, safer place for youngsters throughout New Jersey during the course of his 40-plus-year career in the telecommunications and electrical field,” said Richard Dressel. “He is a compassionate man who genuinely wants to make the world a better place for our next generation and provide them with opportunities to become the best they can be. I am proud to be his colleague and honored to call him my friend.”
The Service to Youth Award is given to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to the community. Misciagna has served on numerous community and industry-wide committees over the years. At IBEW, he is Director of the Youth Transition to Work (YTTW) grant, a state-funded telecommunications pre-apprenticeship program for high school students. Well-known in the community, he has served as councilman and mayor of Hillsdale, N.J. He has also been a guest lecturer for labor relations at Rutgers University and Ramapo College. Past honors include Bergen County’s First Annual Labor Award, the Hudson County Leadership Award and the Bergen County Central Labor Council’s Labor Leader of the Year Award.
“Skilled labor unions like IBEW Local 164 are integral to helping us offer children a positive place where they can explore their interests, forge valuable relationships and prepare for a career,” noted Dwayne Cox, development director of the Boys & Girls Club of Paterson and Passaic. From donating materials and skilled labor services for our facilities to providing speakers for career lectures and training programs, Local 164 provides invaluable support that helps us achieve our mission.” At the awards reception, Dressel pledged an additional $13,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of Paterson and Passaic.
“This honor is very special to me because I am proud to be associated with the Boys & Girls Club, which provides such an important service to the community,” said Misciagna. “It is the young people who should be honored for their desire to realize their fullest potential.”
The Boys & Girls Club of Paterson and Passaic has helped more than 6,000 youngsters with educational support systems and child care services. The Club’s enriching activities help to enhance self-esteem, promote understanding and self-expression, and enable members to realize their full potential.
