Congressman Steven R. Rothman Receives Alzheimer's Assoc. Award

ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION BESTOWS ADVOCACY AWARD TO CONGRESSMAN STEVEN R. ROTHMAN
Greater New Jersey Chapter Presents Highest Honors during National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month

The Alzheimer’s Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter presented the Advocacy Award, one of its most prestigious awards, to Congressman Steven R. Rothman in honor of his outstanding contributions to improving the lives of people with Alzheimer’s disease and their families. Presented at a reception during National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month – a time to recognize the impact of Alzheimer’s disease, which affects more than 350,000 New Jerseyans and their primary caregivers – the Advocacy Award is one of four Circle of Honor Awards given annually by the Chapter’s board of directors.

Congressman Steven R. Rothman represents the 9th Congressional District, including the southern portion of Bergen County, parts of northern Hudson County, and the Borough of Hawthorne in Passaic County. Now serving in his sixth term, Congressman Rothman is a member of the House Appropriations Committee, and sits on the Defense, Foreign Operations, and Agriculture, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Subcommittees of the Appropriations Committee. Congressman Rothman has participated in the Northern Regional Memory Walk since its inception, helping to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease, the needs of caregivers and the need for additional federal funds for research.

“The Circle of Honor Awards are our most prestigious awards, and Congressman Rothman has demonstrated exceptional commitment and passion for our cause,” said Patricia Lombreglia, president and CEO of the Alzheimer's Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter. “He has made a tremendous difference in the lives of thousands in our state that are impacted by Alzheimer’s disease. We are grateful for his support.”

Rothman shared the Advocacy Award honor with Mark Levitt, an Alzheimer’s disease family member. Other 2008 Circle of Honor Awardees were BAE Systems (Corporation of the Year); The Westfield Foundation (Foundation of the Year); and the Old Bridge-Sayreville Rotary Club and Pat Battle, anchor/reporter, WNBC, 4 New York (Spirit Award).

About Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurological disease that causes a steady decline in memory and cognitive function. As the disease progresses, a person with Alzheimer’s will begin to experience confusion, personality and behavior changes, impaired thinking and reasoning, and loss of communication skills. Symptoms generally progress until a person with Alzheimer’s disease is rendered completely incapable of caring for him/herself. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, and while recent research breakthroughs appear promising, there is still no known cure for this disease.
