McNerney Announces Groundbreaking For Public Safety Operations Center

Bergen County Public Safety Operations Center in Mahwah Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney today announced the groundbreaking of a new Bergen County Public Safety Operations Center in Mahwah, located on the campus of the County’s Law and Public Safety Institute. The facility will house the County’s 911 Communications Center, the Office of Emergency Management, and the Emergency Operations Center bringing them all into one building.

“This sharing services initiative will help cut costs and create a state of the art facility that will allow emergency responders to perform their jobs in an efficient manner,” said McNerney. “With new equipment, additional space, and more resources, Bergen County will be better positioned to serve the public.”

DMR Architects of Hasbrouck Heights, N.J. is constructing the two-story, 30,000 square foot building. Environmentally friendly green standards are being applied to the design of the facility including solar panels, and efficient water and mechanical systems. The building will withstand natural disasters and will be equipped with several backup generators.

The 911 Communications Center and the Emergency Operations Center will have multiple monitors enabling emergency responders to view news feeds, maps, video of state highways, county parks, and schools.

“By enhancing the functionality of our technology, we will be able to share resources with municipalities and ensure more safety to our residents,” said Freeholder Julie O’Brien.

The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2010.
