Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney announced that the County of Bergen was awarded a $2,509,038 grant from the New Jersey Transit Corporation’s fiscal year 2009 Senior Citizen and Disabled Resident Transportation Assistance Program. The funding will enable the County’s Division of Community Transportation to continue to provide Bergen County seniors and disabled residents transportation services.
“Providing transportation services is critical to seniors and disabled residents in need of a ride to their physician’s office or place of employment,” said McNerney. “It helps residents lead independent and productive lives.”
“Bergen County is dedicated to making sure that every resident receives quality services that will enhance their everyday lives,” said Freeholder Vernon C. Walton. “The Division of Community Transportation offers seniors and disabled residents an important link to the outside world and the social services that are available to them.”
The Senior Citizen and Disabled Resident Transportation Assistance Program was enacted by the New Jersey State Legislature on January 17, 1984. The program authorizes New Jersey Transit to receive 7.5% of the revenues deposited in the Casino Revenue Fund. Its history extends back to 1981 when New Jersey voters approved an amendment allowing the revenue of casino taxes to be used for additional or expanded transportation services to senior citizens and the disabled.
