South Hackensack Housing – a Paramus Connection

South Hackensack Housing
Special housing in South Hackensack, Bergen County, got a boost Feb. 11 when 25 units of dedicated to senior housing broke ground on Grove Street. Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney and several members of the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders attended a groundbreaking ceremony. Assemblywoman Connie Wagner (D-Paramus, 38th District) was present, poignantly noting that she had grown up, literally, across the street from the project. Her grandmother still lives there.
The Bergen County Department of Community Development, the County's Housing Development Corporation, a nonprofit arm of the Bergen County Housing Authority, along with the nonprofit organization Madeline Corp., and the Township of South Hackensack, collaborated with the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders on this affordable housing project. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2009.

Putting their shovels in the ground were (left to right): South Hackensack Township Committee Member Walter Eckel Jr.; Freeholder Tomas J. Padilla; Freeholder Vernon C. Walton, County Executive Dennis McNerney; South Hackensack Mayor Rosina Romano, Freeholder James M. Carroll; (hatless) Freeholder David L. Ganz, Assemblywoman Connie Wagner, Bergen County Parks Department Construction Project Coordinator John Biale, and South Hackensack Township Committee Member James Anzevino.
The Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders must approve all community development funding. The source of CDBG funding is the federal government. Stringent guidelines are administered by CDBG director Joseph Rutch.

The Board of Chosen Freeholders is the legislative branch of County government in Bergen County. Seven members of the board are elected at large to three year terms. The members are: James Carroll, Julie O'Brien Vice Chairman, Chairman protempore Elizabeth Calabrese, David L. Ganz, Tomas Padilla Bernadette P. McPherson, and Vernon Walton.
