David A. Mooij Named "Resident of the Year" by AIA-NJ at Annual Awards Dinner

David A. Mooij was named the "Resident of the Year" at the New Jersey chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA-NJ) annual awards dinner on Jan. 31, 2009, at The Liberty House in Jersey City, N.J. AIA helps architects serve the public's needs and builds awareness of the role of architects and architecture in American society. The organization was created in 1857. Today, with headquarters in Washington, D.C., and nearly 300 local chapters, the organization represents 86,000 licensed architects and associated professionals.
AIA New Jersey is a local chapter of the national AIA. The chapter was formed in 1900, uniting the architects of the state by merging the AIA Chapter with the New Jersey Society of Architects. The AIA-NJ chapter has six sections, which include Architects League of Northern New Jersey, Central Jersey, Newark and Suburban, Jersey Shore, South Jersey and West Jersey. Each section is independent and runs local events and programs for its members.
Mooij is a resident and the superintendent of schools in Neptune Township, N.J. He is currently responsible for an $80 million annual budget and has more than $300 million in facility construction designed, either in use or underway.
"School facilities are one of many readily available and critically important educational tools that should be used to instruct and inform tomorrow's citizens," said Mooij. "Buildings should serve as learning tools, providing opportunities for students to learn what constitutes an environmentally viable and compatibly green structure. Well-designed schools can and should be sustainable buildings, built at little or no increased cost than 'traditional' school buildings."
In his 35 years with the Neptune Township school district, he has obtained a variety of education certificates and awards, including the peer-nominated "Meritorious Service to the District Award" from the New Jersey Association of School Business Officials and the "Resident of the Year Leadership Award" from AIA-NJ's Jersey Shore section.
The annual event celebrates the top achievements among architects and architectural companies throughout the state.
Other award winners include Robert F. Barranger, AIA, partner at Cornerstone Architectural Group, who was honored with the "Distinguished Service Award;" Barlo & Associates Architects, who were honored with the "Architectural Firm of the Year Award;" Martin Santini, FAIA, founder and former president of Ecoplan Architects, who was honored with the "Architect of the Year Award;" Rafael Da Silva, AIA, founder of Parallel Architectural Group LLC, who was honored with the "Young Architect of the Year Award;" and Sophia Jones, Associate AIA, an architectural designer at Historic Building Architects, who was honored with the "Intern of the Year Award."
