FAIRWAY Market Opens to Standing Room Only

New Fairway Market Opening in Paramus Although there were many dignitaries, State, County and Borough, the big action came from the parking lot. When I arrived at 9:15 AM on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, there was a choice of parking spaces. There was a small crowd around the entrance. The woman in the car next to me was kind enough to alert me that the supermarket would not open for at least another hour. I thanked her; explained that www.ParamusPost.com had been invited to a pre-opening tour.

Fairway Market Opening in Paramus Stopping at the VIP table for our badges, Sophie Stone and I entered a world of beauty. The flowers on our right were exquisitely set, the vegetables arrayed in a continuous mountain of beauty. Even the asparagus, which Sophie displayed, was a work of art.

We meandered through Fairway gaping at the many items on display and how attractive they were. The cheeses, the fish, the meats, the poultry, bagels, breads, coffee grinder and packaged goods all exuded tender care. Howie Glickberg was walking by, greeted me and I asked him to pose for a picture. Nonplused, he stopped, acquiesced to my request to hold a piece of cheese and posed. Later when I told one of the other Fairway executives about how condescending Howie was despite the fact that he was walking the store to make sure that everything was okay on a hectic opening day. The executive quipped . that's appropriate, Howie is the big cheese.

New Fairway Market in Paramus The speeches were started off by Dan Glickberg with a short history of Fairway, followed by Howie, his father. We then heard from Governor Jon Corzine, NJ Senator Bob Gordon, Assemblywoman Connie Wagner, County Executive Dennis McNerney and Mayor Tedesco who relinquished his hold on Haley, his granddaughter, to welcome Fairway to Paramus.

Would you believe that we had a problem negotiating the parking lot to leave. Cars were everywhere and Security personnel were kept busy trying to let vehicles leave and to park.
