The Paramus-based Care Plus Foundation will honor five individuals that have worked to decrease the stigma of mental illness at its 11th Annual Courage Awards Dinner. The dinner, which is accompanied by a silent auction and raffle, is the Foundation’s largest annual fundraiser and will be held on June 18, 2009 at Macaluso’s in Hawthorne, NJ.
"Too often people stigmatize mental illness, not realizing that it touches 1 out of every 4 individuals in our community," said Tara Augustine, Executive Director of the Foundation. "The Courage Awards recognize individuals and corporations that have worked diligently to fulfill the needs of the mentally ill by supplying educational, medical or financial support and taking action to decrease the stigma. They are the heroes of our community and we honor them with pride."
This year’s honorees include Village Office Supply, a full service, one source solution office supply company offering furniture, printing, and special advertising; Weichert Realtors - Fair Lawn, one of the region’s leading providers of homeownership services; Rose Marie Ranuro, Healthy Families Board Member; Jessica Valdenarro, student advocate for mental health; and Michele Weinberg, Board Member, NJ Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
“Care Plus Foundation strives to build a brighter world for those suffering from a diagnosable mental illness - from depression and anxiety, to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. We accomplish this by providing direct support, advocacy and community involvement opportunities” said Augustine.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Foundation’s Bernard Dubnick Scholarship Fund, which assists clients in returning to school; the Ozzie Kwartler Medication Fund, which assists clients with medication; and the Supportive Housing Program, which assists individuals and families by supplying them with necessities such as security deposits, utility bills, furniture, and rental assistance.
Proceeds will also be used to support Care Plus NJ’s innovative and life changing programs including: teaching children life-skills to help them build strong foundations with social skills and anger management programs; keeping kids safe with child abuse and neglect prevention programs; creating housing for teenagers who would otherwise be homeless; and creating jobs for those suffering with a mental illness through CPNJ’s Alternative Work Solutions.
Information on tickets to the event and sponsorship opportunities can be obtained by contacting Tara Augustine at 201-986-5070. For more information about Care Plus Foundation, visiting their website: www.careplusfoundation.org.
