Citing an unemployment rate among youth at over 20% nationally, SuperFutures.org today announced that 30 scholarships are available to help students fund the cost to attend a one-of-a-kind leadership program at the United Nations and Pace University – all designed to help students better prepare for the working world. The scholarship deadline is July 17, 2009 so interested applicants are urged to apply immediately.
“Today’s students are the next generation of leaders but we need to equip them now with the tools, skills and real-world experience that will enable them to have an impact,” said Patrick Sciarratta, a SuperFutures' Advisory Board Member and Co-Founder of the six-year-old Youth Assembly Program at the UN. “SuperFutures provides motivated students the chance to turn what they learn into action - into an experience that can make a difference in their college applications, their lives, even in the lives of others.”
The scholarship covers the dynamic five-day SuperFutures Youth Leadership & Social Entrepreneurship Program held August 8-12 at Pace University in Purchase, New York and includes meals, speakers, and events. The Program – featuring workshops and an exclusive exchange with some 50 Chinese teens -- will teach students to turn their passions and knowledge of global issues into real-world impact by developing their own social entrepreneurial ventures. Students will leave with a Personal Action Plan and video or essay about their experience, which can be used in college or job applications.
If students wish to stay in accommodations at Pace University and also attend the three-day Youth Assembly at the United Nations August 5-7, immediately preceding the SuperFutures Leadership Program, there is a fee of $795. Scholarship students not opting for accommodations will need to provide their own transportation to the daily events.
The standard tuition for the full 8-day program is $2,995.
SuperFutures will offer scholarships based on quality and need to students ages 14-18 in the Tri-State Area (New York, New Jersey and Connecticut) or elsewhere with self-provided airfare transportation. Students should have an average grade of B or higher, a demonstrated interest in community service or giving back, and financial need. Interested candidates should immediately request an application by emailing: apply@superfutures.org as the final deadline is July 17th. In the application, students will be asked to answer the question: “Why would I like to participate in the 2009 SuperFutures Program and what do I hope to gain from this experience?”

“We know more than ever that this is a global world, and the students who will succeed are the ones who will be prepared to compete in a tough job climate,” said Jennifer Openshaw, founder of SuperFutures.org and a nationally known author, entrepreneur, and financial commentator who’s appeared on Oprah, CNN, Today and many other programs. “With everyone hurting – parents and students – this is our way of extending a financial helping hand to enable more students to learn how to impact their lives and the lives of others.”
