Gang Awareness Training for Healthcare and Education Professionals
By Mel Fabrikant Wednesday, September 23, 2009, 04:50 PM EDT
Offered by Englewood Hospital, on Wed., Oct. 14, 2009
It’s a harsh reality that no community is immune to gang violence. Hospital emergency room staff and other healthcare workers as well as teachers and school administrators can find themselves in vulnerable situations when dealing with gang members. To help these groups learn how to identify potential gang activity and prevent or diffuse violent situations, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center is offering Gang Awareness Training for Healthcare & Education Professionals on Wednesday, October 14, 2009, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (Sign in is at 8:30, with a light breakfast served.) Emergency department and hospital physicians, nurses, registrars, patient advocates, security staff and social workers, as well as school guidance counselors and teachers (no students, please) are encouraged to attend.
To be held in the Medical Center’s auditorium, the free event is presented in conjunction with the New Jersey Hospital Association, with officers from the Street Crimes Unit of the New Jersey Parole Department leading the program. The training will help attendees:
· Become familiar with the warning signs of gang affiliation, gang signs, language, markings and identifiers.
· Develop an increased awareness of the problem of gang activity in New Jersey.
· Learn how to assess any preparedness gaps at their organizations.
· Review a hospital-based model for gang preparedness and identify opportunities for organizational/community involvement.
To register for this free event, contact Diane Casella, Englewood Hospital, at 201.894.3320 or Diane.Casella@ehmc.com.
