AIA-NJ Sponsors Event for Architecture Students and Interns

Program Will Examine Requirements for Licensure in New Jersey

Architecture students and intern architects from throughout the State of New Jersey are invited to participate in a seminar on the Intern Development Program (IDP) and the Architectural Registration Exam (ARE) to be held at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) School of Architecture in Newark, N.J., on Nov. 3.

The seminar will address questions and concerns about the three-year internship program, which is required in order to take the licensing examination, as well as those about the examination itself, said Joyce M. Scatuccio, Associate AIA, who is the IDP coordinator for the sponsor, the New Jersey chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA-NJ).

The program is expected to draw architecture students and alumni from NJIT, home of the state's only school of architecture; Brookdale Community College in Lincroft and Essex County College in Newark, whose two-year architecture programs have articulation agreements with NJIT and other colleges; and Princeton University.

Scatuccio urged all intern architects and architecture students to attend the seminar, which is the only one of its kind in the state, so that they don't make any wrong turns in pursuing their architecture careers.

"There is a lot of misunderstanding about the requirements," she said. "It's good for all architecture students -- but especially those who are in their third, fourth and fifth years and beyond -- to learn about the requirements as soon as possible so that they are not thrown off course in their career paths."

The seminar will be moderated by Scatuccio, with questions being fielded by a panel consisting of John A. Cwikla, Associate AIA, LEED AP, and chair of the Emerging Professionals Committee of AIA-NJ; Jerome Leslie Eben, AIA, past president of AIA-NJ; and Stacey Ruhle Kliesch, AIA, LEED AP, and president of AIA-NJ.

"In New Jersey, prospective architects must complete a three-year internship before they are eligible to take the state licensing examination," Scatuccio said. The internship follows the completion of their educations, which may consist of either a bachelor's of architecture or a bachelor's degree in another field with a master's of architecture.

More than $6,000 in raffle prizes have been donated by sponsors, including tickets to entertainment events and study materials from NALSA (National Academic & Licensing Study Aids), Professional Publications Inc., Kaplan Inc. and other publishers, Scatuccio said. In addition, the first 100 attendees will receive free gifts.

The event will take place from 5:30 to 8 p. m. at Weston Lecture Hall I. The event is being organized by NJIT Career Development Services and is open to all, including licensed architects who may be interested on behalf of the architecture students or intern architects in their offices.

Registration, which is free, is required by Oct. 30. To register, contact Denise Thomas at NJIT Career Development Services with your name, school, graduation year and e-mail address at Thomd223@njit.edu or call 973-596-3646.
