Mayor and Council Meeting 10-27-09

Meeting 10-27-09 Despite the inclement weather and Council absenteeism, Mayor Tedesco held the Paramus Borough Council meeting. He explained that Councilwoman Cathy Bentz was attending the wake of a dear friend and Councilman Fred Hayo was watching over his son who just had a serious operation. The Mayor mentioned that the Board of Health was undertaking legislation to ban e-cigarettes, the first BoH in the state to do so. Former Paramus Councilwoman and now State Assemblywoman Connie Wagner is sponsoring legislation at the state level.

Council President Denis Niland read a letter from a resident praising the new Senior Bus and its part-time driver. Tedesco further elaborated that modifications had been made to make the bus more readably accessible. The track at Paramus High School will be undergoing renovations soon. Funded three ways through the Board of Education, Bergen County and Paramus, when finished, it will not be muddy and will be open to Paramus residents.

Thursday night, there will be a meeting in the Council Chamber to discuss funding for senior residents who qualify for rehabilitation loans for their homes. Funds from the 1.4 million dollars COAH fund will be made available for this project. Applications will be available at the meeting. Tedesco stressed that this is not taxpayer monies.

November 11th will see a Veterans Day Memorial Service at Memorial School.

In the Open to the Public portion, a gentleman arose to protest the fact that the Borough had gone back on its word to provide Yoga sessions at the senior center. The Mayor had all the figures available to explain that the Paramus Mayor and Council was living up to its promise of having Yoga sessions. According to the Mayor, the instructor insisted on being paid 3 times the going rate, $100 per hour for very small classes. Negotiations broke down and the Borough is now looking for someone who would charge a more reasonable stipend.
