"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words ………………?" were the first words that Dr. Paul Winkler, Executive Director of the NJ State Commission on Holocaust Education asked the assembled group of Paramus High school students. Dr. Winkler conducted a Q & A session with them before introducing Paramus resident and author Fred Buff.
His stress was upon words and the harm they can inflict; how they affect the people on the receiving end. He delved into the value of writing words and likened Fred Buff's actions to those of Anne Frank. He showed the group that writing one's experiences can have an everlasting effect; that they are invaluable.
Dr. Paul Winkler: Among the people on hand were NJ Civil Rights Commissioner Dr. Joan Rivitz (a former PHS educator). Etzion Neuer, NJ Regional Director of the ADL, Stephan J. Draisin, Esq. Holocaust Commission Member, Dr. Maryann McLoughlin of Richard Stockton College (editor), Paramus Superintendant of Schools James Montesano. Assistant Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Lupo and members of the Buff family.
NJ State Senator Bob Gordon and NJ State Assemblywoman Connie Wagner presented Fred Buff with a lengthy Commendation which Gordon read to the assemblage. In turn, Fred Buff presented them with autographed copies of The St. Louis Diary of Fred Buff, Riding The Storm.
Fred (Fritz) Buff, an octogenarian, remarked as he approached the dais that he was used to being the last in line. He spoke to the students and adult audience and was truly in his glory.
