For most people thinking about adopting a child, there are numerous questions, such as “Where do I start?” “How long does it take?” “What is a home study?” “Should I adopt domestically or internationally?” and “Can I afford to adopt?” To help families get the information they need to make this life-changing decision, Children’s Aid and Family Services is presenting “Adoption 101: Everything you ever wanted to know about adoption,” at its Family and Adoption Services Center, 148 Prospect Street, Ridgewood, NJ. This free workshop is Thursday, January 21, 2010 from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.
Topics covered include private and international adoption, older child adoption and fostering/adopting. The workshop will be led by adoptive families who will share their experiences and answer questions. Speakers include Nancy Greene, director of the Ridgewood Public Library, whose daughter was adopted from China.
“Children’s Aid and Family Services has helped more than 10,000 children find loving adoptive families during its 110-year history,” says Bob Jones, Ph.D., president and CEO of the agency. “We want to offer our expertise and resources to families thinking about adopting who often experience some uncertainty and doubt and need support during this time.”
This is the first of a series of free workshops that will focus on various aspects of adoption. Upcoming workshops include:
Date Workshop
March 18, 2010 Trans-Racial Adoption: Explore the issues of raising a child of race or culture different from your own
April 15, 2010 Same Sex Partner and Single Parent Adoption: How to help children handle difficult questions
