Jacobsen Receives National Environmental Award Glenn Jacobsen, CLP, founder and owner of Jacobsen Landscape Design of Midland Park and Saddle River, was honored recently at PLANET’s (Professional Landcare Network) 40th Annual Environmental Awards Ceremony for the company’s role in the preservation of a local Ho-Ho-Kus landmark. The historic home, one of Bergen County’s Jersey Dutch sandstone houses, has elements predating the American Revolution. After 200 years the property saw numerous owners and many modifications, yet still stood in a state of disrepair. The owner’s vision for this homestead was a historically correct transformation.

Working for more than two years with a team of engineers and architects, Jacobsen researched every aesthetic and technical element of the site to make sure they were all reflective of the time and geographic area according to the earliest available photographs (circa 1900).

“Unlike today’s landscapes and gardens, carefully arranged and manicured foundation plantings were uncommon in the 1700s,” says Jacobsen. “ Plantings reflected society’s minimalist approach and attitude. So it was important that the few plantings chosen for this restoration, like the various stonework, were time-period accurate.

“Also challenging was that only few elements, such as two bluestone steps, the remnants of a brick wall and a millstone, remained from the original homestead,” he adds. “ Each was carefully collected and incorporated into the new design.”  This initiative was a team effort involving outside design colleagues as well as Jacobsen Landscape designers and installers. “Without the support and commitment of the homeowners however, it could not have been accomplished,” says Jacobsen. “They really deserve the recognition.”
