Mother Seton Council #5427 of the Knights of Columbus in the Township of Washington is sponsoring a drive in coordination with “Physicians for Peace” to help the victims of the earthquake. Many were left with “crushing” injuries that resulted in thousands of amputations. These patients must transition from crutches to prostheses over time.
Throughout the month of February, Mother Seton Council will be a drop-off point in a drive to collect crutches, canes, wheel chairs, walkers and prescription eyeglasses. Mother Seton Council has joined with the Physicians for Peace organization to respond to the needs of the people of Haiti. At the end of February, all the donated items will be delivered to Physicians for Peace in Norfolk, Virginia, and then transported to Haiti. If you have items you would like to donate, you can leave them in the vestibule of the Members’ Room in the rear of the K of C Hall at 79 Pascack Road, Township of Washington, NJ. The cub scouts of Washington Township have joined us in this work of mercy.
The Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882 at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut, by Fr. Michael J. McGivney. It is the world’s largest Catholic, family, fraternal, service organization with over 1.78 million members in some 13,700 local councils in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Guam, Guatemala, Panama, the Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, Saipan and Poland. It is dedicated to Church, community, family, and youth programs. Last year individual Knights spent 69 million hours in volunteer services and the Order donated $150 million in charitable contributions. Members of the K of C also spent 6 million hours visiting the sick and bereaved and delivered 10 million hours in fraternal services to them. Additionally 413,402 Knights were blood donors. The New Jersey Knights donated $4,568,772 to charities last year.
Applications for membership in the Knights of Columbus are welcome from qualified individuals. For details call 201-664-0422 and ask for more information or go to our website, www.kofc5427.org.
