Bergen Community College announces the appointment of local attorney and civil rights advocate Hani Khoury to its Board of Trustees. The newest trustee was appointed to the post by the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders and will serve a 20-month term on the College’s governing body. “Mr. Khoury is a distinguished attorney and civil rights advocate. His insights and experience will serve the College well,” said Dr. G. Jeremiah Ryan, Bergen’s president.
Mr. Khoury, of Hackensack, is one of the founding partners of Ariyan, Khoury & Schildiner, LLP, a Hackensack law firm specializing in immigration and nationality law, real estate transactions and general practice. Mr. Khoury has worked as an attorney since 1992 and helped establish Ariyan, Khoury & Schildiner in 2000.
In addition to his work as an attorney, Mr. Khoury devotes his time to various charitable and civil rights organizations, including Shelter Our Sisters, a nonprofit organization for victims of abuse in Bergen County. He is an active member of the New Jersey American-Arab Anti Discrimination Committee and has served as the board’s president, vice president and treasurer. He is also a member of the Arab American Institute’s National Policy Council and has served on the Arab & Muslim Advisory Committee to the New Jersey Attorney General.
Mr. Khoury frequently conducts diversity training for local police departments and participates in seminars about Arab and Muslim culture. He developed a course for Rutgers University, “The Arab & Muslim Immigration Experience,” and taught the course as a part-time lecturer.
Mr. Khoury earned a B.A. from Colgate University and a J.D. from New York Law School. He was born in Greece and emigrated to the U.S. when he was seven.
