How do you feel about living in the suburbs? Do you enjoy the familiarity and comfort of your neighborhood or do you feel that everyday life is routine and lacks excitement? Faculty, staff and students from Bergen Community College’s Performing Arts Department will examine these stereotypical ideals about suburban life when they perform selected scenes from playwrights as part of “Suburbia Onstage” on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ender Hall Laboratory Theatre on Bergen Community College’s main campus at 400 Paramus Road, Paramus. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $7 for students and seniors (65+) and are available by calling Bergen’s Office of Community and Cultural Affairs at (201) 447-7428 or visit them on the Web at www.bergen.edu
The scene excerpts for the performance were chosen by Bergen Professor Kaye DeMetz, who has researched the subject of the suburban lifestyle for the past ten years. The performance will showcase scene selections from a series of plays including “Period of Adjustment,” by Tennessee Williams, “A Raisin in the Sun,” by Lorraine Hansbury and “Reckless” by Craig Lucas.
Following the performance, audience members can participate in a question and answer session to discuss their own perceptions of suburbia.
Guest Directors for the Performance:
Kristin Reeves from West Milford
Ken Bonnaffons from Central Valley, New York
John Ehrenberg from New Milford
Mary Clifford from Vernon, New York
Okey Chenowith from Oakland
David MacFarlane, Director of Music, from Bogota
