The Fireside Chat
Striking an innovative note, members of the Paramus Sunrise Rotary Club helped to support the National MS Society by shopping at Fairway Market on March 10th. Fairway Markets donated 10% of their sales to the Society to help support MS. The Rotarians did this by arranging to have a Fireside Chat meeting and to purchase their dinners at Fairway Market and then going over to Club President Mukesh Malkan’s home to dine. Of course they bought extras.
The Fireside Chat under the aegis of member Betsy Thomason was designed to help new members get a grasp of some of the many Rotary activities. Past District Governor (PDG) Peter Lefkowitz honored the club by attending and explaining the Rotary Foundation. He pointed out many facets, some of which was educational to the longtime Rotarians, not only the new members. The good that Rotary does through the Foundation, the many areas like Group Study Exchange, Health Hunger and Humanity, Ambassadorial Scholarships, Polio Plus and Community and International are supported by the over 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide.
To join the Foundation and become a Paul Harris Fellow, $1,000.00 is donated to the Foundation. The PDG explained that it could also be done by 10 increments of $100.00 apiece thus becoming a Sustaining Member until the full amount is reached. Not stopping there, one can go on donating and getting a sapphire added to the Recognition Pin and then a ruby. Upon reaching $10,000.00 one becomes a Major Donor and gets a pin with a diamond. Of course one can add more diamonds, if wished, thus supporting this worthy endeavor.
Gathered around the table at Mukesh and Kashmira’s home, the members were treated to not only food from Fairway’s Hot to Go Department but also by special treats provided by the hosts. Member Joe Castelano of Doctors Express brought some delicious cannolis to help round out the desserts provided by the Malkans.
The MS group is holding a Walk on April 18th to help create a world free of MS. For details, contact
