On March 31st at 6pm, Care Plus Foundation and Bergen Community College Wellness Center will be screening the award-winning documentary from actor Joey Pantoliano called No Kidding, Me Too. The documentary aims to shed light on mental health and to remove the stigma associated with mental illness.
The film features a group of individuals, including Joey P, struggling with mental health issues. It poignantly presents their stories and their struggles. It very clearly highlights the need to decrease the stigma so those in need will seek the help they require to reach their fullest potential. The film will air on PBS in April.
"I was diagnosed with clinical depression three years ago and after I was diagnosed, there was this euphoric feeling that it was not my fault," Joe Pantoliano said. "I thought it was important to talk about and come out with my own mental illness and in doing that, I realized it's not a minority of us; it affects so many Americans."
Several of the individuals featured in the film are young adults, and we are fortunate to have one of them, Jordan Burnham, joining us for the evening. As a high school senior, Jordan Burnham had everything to live for. He was popular, had good grades, and was a star athlete. However, Jordan secretly battled depression. As the pressures mounted, Jordan attempted to take his own life by jumping from a 9th story window. Jordan's miraculous survival propelled him to begin to deal with his depression and learn healthier coping mechanisms.
A panel discussion featuring Jordan, students and mental health professionals will follow the film, providing a meaningful dialogue to promote awareness and prevention.
We are hosting the film at Bergen Community College Technical Building, Room 128. Tickets are available for $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Bergen Community College ID holders are admitted for free. Seating is limited, advance reservations are recommended. To make reservations or purchase tickets call the Care Plus Foundation 201-986-5070 or foundation@careplusnj.org.
