It’s pouring out and if your kids are like mine they’re already going a little stir crazy. Today is actually the perfect day to head over to the New Jersey Children’s Museum. I stumbled upon this place a couple of years ago. It’s located in a commercial development between Paramus Park and Route 17, near the Valley Health building.
I was a little apprehensive when I first walked in because I didn’t quite know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the exhibits and how they could appeal to a wide range of ages. My oldest son was about a 1 ½ when we went the first time and he was able to enjoy many areas.
There are about 30 exhibits and each one is set up as a themed play area. The themes include a Grocery Store, a Fire Truck, a Fossil Cave, a Medieval Castle, and many more. They’ve done a great job of combining information and imaginative learning. For example, kids are given a cart and money at the Grocery Store so they can pick out their food and pay for it at the cash register. The Fire Truck exhibit includes a real fire truck and fireman gear so kids can role-play.
I like this place. The kids always enjoy it and each time we go they seem to have a new favorite area. I’m going to be honest with you; if you haven’t been then you should know that this place has a used look. I’m not saying it’s dirty but you can tell that hundreds of kids are trafficking through on a weekly basis and using/enjoying the items. This doesn’t keep me away and it shouldn’t keep you away. Sinks and hand sanitizer is available on the way out and I’d like to point out that we’ve never gotten sick after playing here.
Admission is $10 plus tax for adults and children. Babies under 1 are free.
The New Jersey Children’s Museum is located on 599 Valley Health Plaza in Paramus, NJ, 07652- 201-262-5151. http://www.njcm.com
