Cultural Events, Fitness Programs and Special Mother’s Day Celebration Highlight May Events at Heritage Pointe of Teaneck


Public is Invited to Mother’s Day Luncheon, Educational Lectures and Exercise Classes

Heritage Pointe of Teaneck, a full-service rental retirement community, invites area residents to expand their knowledge base, enjoy lively programs and lectures, and improve their physical health throughout May. All programs are free and open to the public.

• Maintaining maximal physical fitness is important at any age. Heritage Pointe encourages residents and guests to exercise as often as possible with its weekday exercise classes, held every Monday through Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the Community Room.
 
Fitness instructors from the area lead age-appropriate exercises that help improve balance and coordination, build muscle strength, increase circulation and lift the spirits at the same time. Disciplines include the Japanese art of tai chi on Mondays, stretching and flexibility training on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Zumba® classes on Wednesdays and yoga on Fridays.

• Mon., May 3 – David Aaron, a professional clarinetist, band leader and lecturer, will present the music, fun and trivia of the Broadway hit, “My Fair Lady” at 3 p.m. Aaron will play recordings of the show’s hit songs and memorable music, and discuss historical vignettes of the show’s era.

• Tues., May 4 and 18 – Westminster Choir College graduate Christine Cullen returns to Heritage Pointe for another session of her series “For the Love of Opera” at 1:45 p.m. Attendees will hear selections from the world’s most beloved composers and learn about the history of opera.

• Wed., May 5 – Representatives from the Teaneck Creek Conservancy will host an informative seminar highlighting the beautiful nature preserve located next to Heritage Pointe of Teaneck, as well the various programs offered by the non-profit organization. In addition, attendees will learn how they can help the Teaneck Creek Conservancy by volunteering at The Barclays 2010 PGA Golf Tournament in Paramus, N.J. in August. The presentation will begin at 11:30 a.m.

• Fri., May 7 – A celebration of Mexican heritage will be on display when Heritage Pointe hosts a Cinco de Mayo Happy Hour at 4 p.m. The exciting mariachi band from Mama Mexico in Englewood will be on hand to entertain while participants enjoy Mexican appetizers and margaritas.

• Sat., May 8 – Adult sons and daughters in the Bergen County area are invited to bring their mothers to a special Mother’s Day luncheon at noon, which is being offered at no charge. Guests will have an opportunity to tour Heritage Pointe and view its spacious one-, two- and three-bedroom rental apartments, see the community’s distinctive amenities and dine on a gourmet luncheon prepared by Heritage Pointe’s executive chef. Menu selections will include beef tenderloin, chicken marsala, tortellini alfredo, garden salad, green beans and assorted pastries and cookies. Background music will be provided by harpist Ardis Calvin, the International Platform Association's first prizewinner and the recipient of the American Federation of Music Clubs’ annual award for outstanding musical performance in Washington, D.C. • Mon., May 10 – Heritage Pointe’s monthly artist spotlight program, led by former NYU Art Professor Bart D’Andrea, features Spanish artist Pablo Picasso at 3 p.m. D’Andrea will discuss how Picasso developed his unique style of painting and talk about the artist’s other talents as a draughtsman and sculptor.

• Wed., May 12 – Jerry Lynch, a certified financial planner and owner of JFL Consulting, will discuss how retirees can protect their assets and ensure a more stable financial future at 4 p.m. Lynch has been named among America’s Best Financial Planners six years in a row and is a frequent guest on CNBC business talk shows.

• Mon., May 17 – Attendees will almost be able to reach out and touch the raw beauty of Canada when professional photographer Ray Turkin presents a slide show of rare and unseen footage of the Canadian Rockies at 2:30 p.m.

• Wed., May 19 – Hypertension is a chronic medical condition that affects one in four American adults. Older adults are encouraged to learn more about the warning signs of elevated blood pressure and methods to control it when a representative from Valley Home Care presents “Hypertension” at 3:15 p.m.

• Fri., May 21 – Sheryl Heffernan, RN, will visit Heritage Pointe for the first in her series on Relaxation Tips & Tricks at 11:30 a.m. Heffernan will discuss and demonstrate relaxation exercises to manage pain and anxiety. She uses various modalities to help attendees get relaxed, such as aromatherapy with lavender, stress balls, visualization exercises and combining music and breathing.

• Mon., May 24 – Heritage Pointe of Teaneck is hosting an important presentation at 3 p.m. entitled “Stroke Awareness and Prevention” by Nancy Ellson, RN, MSN, APN, in honor of National Stroke Awareness Month. Ellson is the coordinator for the Center for Healthy Living at Holy Name Hospital; she will discuss the warning signs, risk factors and recovery issues of a stroke for older adults.

• Thurs., May 27 – Newshounds and current affairs fans will enjoy “Current Issues in the News,” an ongoing program designed to describe and explain the nature of politics and how it affects our daily lives. Group participation is strongly encouraged at this current events seminar, led by former political science professor Rhoda Plotkin, which begins promptly at 4 p.m.
