Sunrise Meeting 06-08-10
A former Washington Senator and Minnesota Twins catcher explained the rigors of going up through the minor leagues before achieving a role in major league baseball. Ed Onorato (Paramus Save Our Wetlands) regaled the Rotary Club members with stories of his rise to major league status. Also present was District Governor Glenn Wram from Australia who gave a short talk on Rotary Clubs.
President Mukesh Malkan had heard DG Glenn the evening before at District 7490 District Governor Raj Bhatia’s last staff meeting of the year. He arranged with Rotarian Lois Horowitz, their host, to transport Glenn to our meeting. DG Wram was asked to take part in Paramus Sunrise Rotary’s unique version of the 4Way Test. A good sport, as Rotarians are, Glenn Wram joined right in!
Ed Onorato spun some fascinating tales of his entry into professional baseball. He recounted how his new bride had washed some red garments with his white ones and he had to display pink underwear in the locker room. Several of us groaned in remembrance of our laundry errors. Playing minor league baseball, he happened to cut his right hand. When the umpire saw the blood, he tossed Ed out of the game stating that he only had three balls left and couldn’t afford to get them bloody! Those were the ‘good old days’!
Another distinguished visitor was Chrysoula Lile, a noted artist, who had just finished displaying her works at the St. John the Theologian Greek Festival that past weekend. She has been commissioned to do a mural for St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church in Paramus. Members Buzzy Dressel and John DeBouter were congratulated on their winning re-election to their positions in the IBEW.
Paramus Sunrise Rotary Club Is holding their 3rd Installation Dinner at Sanzari’s in New Milford on Wednesday evening, June 16th.
