As Part of Whole Foods' 'Kids Day', Children Receive Free Plantings and Advice to Attracting Beautiful Creatures to Their Garden
With children looking for new and exciting outdoor activities to fill the summer days, Midland Park, N.J.-based R&S Landscaping recently hosted a fun-filled, free workshop, instructing local children on the best way to create new homes for one of nature's most beautiful creatures -- the butterfly.
On June 24, R&S Landscaping's experts brought a variety of plants and perennials to the Ridgewood Whole Foods, located at 44 Godwin Avenue, and used them to teach children the best ways to plant and care for their very own butterfly garden. Known for its extreme commitment to community greening, R&S Landscaping also provided each child in attendance with three butterfly attracting plants in a small Whole Foods pot to help them start their own butterfly garden at home.
As the kids chose their plants and potted them, R&S team members also took time to explain to the children one-on-one exactly how a garden attracts a variety of butterflies through utilizing plants that butterflies can easily perch upon for food, some rest and shelter from the sun. The team also explained the similarities of plants that attract butterflies and the conditions in which they need to grow.
"Our feedback from the kids and parents let us know that they all had a blast. Some were excited to pick their very own flowering plants to begin their garden, and others were more excited for an opportunity to get their hands dirty. In either case, we are happy they could learn about one of nature's most elegant creatures and their relationship with nature," stated Robert Schucker, president of R&S Landscaping.
In addition to the butterfly workshop, as part of "Kids Day", Whole Foods hosted "Tasting Thursday", inviting local families inside to taste-test a variety of treats throughout the store. Children also had the opportunity to enjoy additional activities, such as decorating their own cupcakes.
