On Sept. 16, Robert Schucker of R&S Landscaping Will Provide Common Sense Techniques For Conserving Water in the Lawn and Garden
On Thursday, Sept. 16, New York and New Jersey residents are invited to learn how to conserve precious water resources and save money when landscaping. Sponsored by Bergen Save The Watershed Action Network (SWAN), "Watershed-Friendly Landcare Workshop II" will feature an evening of interesting presentations about current practices in ecological land care.
The workshop is the second in a series of educational programs held by Bergen SWAN on maintaining homes and landscapes in a more environmentally sensitive fashion. The first workshop, which focused on streamside landscaping and organic lawn care, was held in June at United Water. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with healthy dinner and snacks at Hungry Hollow Co-op, a community-owned natural foods market at 841 Chestnut Ridge Road/Route 45 in Spring Valley, N.Y. (just over the New Jersey border).
From 5:45 to 6:30 p.m., Ray Manacas and Bill Day of Threefold Educational Center will host a rain garden talk and tour of the 3,000-square-foot rain garden at Hungry Hollow Co-op. The talk will cover design principles, construction and maintenance of rain gardens and upland native plantings, using the Co-op's grounds as a case study.
Then, from 7 to 9 p.m., the event's main program will be held at Threefold Auditorium, located at 260 Hungry Hollow Road. Rob Schucker, president of Midland Park, N.J.-based R&S Landscaping, will speak on water-efficient irrigation approaches, providing simple to high-tech, common sense techniques for conserving water in the lawn and garden. Also, Bill Kolvek of B.K. Perennials will speak on low water and water-retaining landscaping.
"We are all stewards of the environment, and it's important that we understand the importance of water conservation," Schucker said. "I look forward to sharing practical water conservation techniques with homeowners. Each of them can really make a difference in conserving water and reducing storm water runoff."
Admission to the "Watershed-Friendly Landcare Workshop II" is free, but pre-registration is recommended. To pre-register, e-mail bergenswan@sprynet.com or call Bergen SWAN at 201-666-1877 or the office of Assemblywoman Ellen Jafee at 845-624-4601.
