POLICE CHIEFS' MESSAGE
Welcome back everyone. Hope you all had a great summer vacation. It sure was "Hot" enough! As we all know, once school starts there will be children walking, bicycling, and busing to school. I urge students to be especially careful when crossing the streets. I have personally witnessed children talking to their friends or on a cell phone, and obviously not watching for traffic. Please do not talk on the phone while crossing streets, it is a very unsafe and dangerous practice. Parents and other drivers, please be aware that once the school year begins children will be present between 7:30 and 8:30 am, and 2:30 to 3:30 pm. Although we should always be alert, it is especially important during the school year. I wish everyone a happy and safe school year.
Chief Richard Zavinsky
CHIEF ARRESTS DRUNK DRIVING SUSPECT INVOLVED IN 3 HIT AND RUN ACCIDENTS
On August 25th at 2:55 pm a motorist flagged down Chief Rich Zavinsky and informed him a pick up truck had just been involved in a motor vehicle collision and fled the scene. Zavinsky stopped the vehicle on El Dorado Court. After a brief on scene investigation, the driver, Laura Byrne age 49 of Maywood, was charged with D.W.I. and numerous other motor vehicle violations. A subsequent investigation revealed Byrne had crashed into a vehicle in Maywood, and 2 others in Rochelle Park prior to being apprehended. Assisting the chief was Det. Lt. Flannelly, Det. Jim DePreta, and P.O. Ed Kukalski, who was the investigating officer.
