Additional Course Offerings Include Exercise and Art Programs
Back to school isn’t just for youngsters, teens and college students anymore. The arrival of September also marks “back to school” for area seniors who want to take advantage of free collegiate-level courses being offered at The Atrium at The Allendale Community for Mature Living. The senior community is kicking off its new series, The Teaching Company’s Great Courses, with “Ancient Egypt” in September. “This program is an extension of The Atrium’s life-long learning courses in the arts and history that have been offered to our residents and area seniors for many years,” said Mary Stampleman, ADC, Director of Therapeutic Recreation & Community Relations. “The Great Courses series allows us to bring prominent, engaging professors to our community, where we encourage adventures in learning at any age.”
Established in 1990, Great Courses attracts teachers from leading colleges and universities, including the Ivy League, Stanford and Georgetown, who have developed more than 250 courses in a lecture-style DVD format. “Ancient Egypt” is led by Professor Bob Brier, who regularly hosts and contributes to The History Channel and The Learning Channel. He formerly served as the director of the National Endowment for the Humanities’ “Egyptology Today” Program. He is a two-time Fulbright Scholar and a recipient of the David Newton Award for Teaching Excellence. The classes will be held every Monday at 11 a.m. beginning Sept. 20.
In addition to the Great Courses series, The Atrium is offering free exercise and art education programs as part of its “Back to School” program. Highlights include Chair Yoga every Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.; Zumba Gold for Seniors on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m.; watercolor art workshops with Lorraine on Sept. 9 and 23 at 10:30 a.m., and a “Reflections on Art” class with Darby on Sept. 16 and 30 at 11 a.m.
The Allendale Community for Mature Living, which is located at 85 Harreton Rd. just off of Route 17 South in Allendale, offers a wide range of cultural, educational and social programs for seniors, many of which are open to the public. For more information about the “Back to School” series or to pre-register, call Mary Stampleman at (201) 818-7979.
