"Where bargains were born" teams up with "Educated Consumers" to open new co-branded Filene's Basement-SYMS

Shoppers who love great deals on designer fashions will soon have some expanded options in New York. SYMS Tailored & Tux will open on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, adjacent to its sister store, Filene’s Basement. And Filene’s Basement will join forces with two long-standing SYMS Clothing stores, one in Westbury, Long Island and the other in the Westchester County town of Elmsford. All three stores will open at 9 AM on Thursday, September 16, 2010. Combined, the stores will employ 413 full and part-time workers, 83 of them in new positions.
Big signs in the storefront of Broadway and 80th Streets are heralding the arrival of SYMS “Tailored & Tux.” Over 3000 men’s suits in all size categories, plus suit separates, sport coats, dress pants, overcoats, raincoats, tuxedos and shoes will occupy the entire second floor. An on-site tailor will offer ‘while you wait’ service for hemming dress pants, and a two-day turnaround for cuffs and waist alterations. Ground level will house men’s sportswear and children’s apparel and home goods will fill the lower level. By moving these departments into the new space, the selection of fashions for women will be tripled. Fashion apparel, accessories and shoes for women will now fill all three levels of Filene’s Basement at Broadway and 79th Street.
“Since 1993, Filene’s Basement has filled a void on the Upper West Side by being the only retailer there offering a designer and brand name fashions for men, women and kids at discounted prices,” said Marcy Syms, Chairman of SYMS Corporation, which owns Filene’s Basement. “The store was a hit from day one, but space was limited. With this expansion, we are better able to serve the needs of the neighborhood, expanding all categories of apparel, especially our kids’ department.”
In a move designed to offer the very best of each retailer under one roof, SYMS Clothing and Filene’s Basement are joining forces in two existing SYMS locations, one in Westbury at 695 Merrick Avenue and the other in Elmsford at 295 Tarrytown Road. “It made perfect sense to combine the strengths of both stores to give customers the best shopping experience,” said Syms. The new co-branded stores will offer an expanded selection of American and especially European designer and famous-label fashions, all at off-price. Men’s and ladies’ sizes will be supplemented with special sizes, including petites, women’s, big & tall, young men’s and juniors. A “Tailored & Tux” (SYMS’ name for its men’s tailored merchandise) and an on-site tailor shop have been added as the size of the children’s department has doubled.
Stores magazine ranks SYMS Corporation number one on its annual list of Hot 100 Retailers (August, 2010). The company has already opened three Filene’s Basement-SYMS Clothing co-branded stores, two in Connecticut and one in Massachusetts. Plans to combine Filene’s Basement with three of SYMS’ South Florida locations are underway.
