Kosherfest 2010 Debuts 100's Of New Products For The Under Forty Set
By Mel Fabrikant Monday, October 11, 2010, 11:36 AM EDT
Most probably your mother’s kosher kitchen didn’t contain Chorizo Mexican style sausage, Sangria in a box or sriracha sauce……fast forward to 2010, where today’s kosher pantry reflects the gourmet tastes and health conscious diets of the under 40 set. There’s even a new Kosher iPhone app.
According to Menachem Lubinsky, founder and co-producer of the largest and longest running kosher food trade show, Kosherfest, “With 60% of the market believed to be under the age of 40, the kosher food industry is producing gourmet and enhanced food products.
At the same time, it is producing an unprecedented number of gluten-free, spelt, organic and natural foods, a reflection of a growing health consciousness by all classes of consumers.”
Kosher statistics: According to several sources*, the number of kosher consumers in the U.S. tops 12,100,000, and 21% of Americans who regularly or occasionally purchase kosher products do so because the items are kosher-certified. There are approximately 10,650 kosher producing companies and plants, there are 125,000 kosher certified products, 40% of kosher sales occur on the eve of Passover, 19,000 is the average number of kosher products in US supermarkets, and the dollar value of kosher products produced in the USA is $305,000,000,000.
Phyllis Koegel is Director of Marketing at the OU, one of the largest kosher certifiers in the world. She helps non-kosher companies acquire kosher certification…..like the recent OU certification of Jelly Belly and Tootsie Roll pops. “OU kosher certification continues to grow at a rate of 7% to 15% a year, specifically in the snack, beverage and private label categories. Businesses are looking to maximize their market share by appealing to a broad range of customers. Having kosher certification is a business decision which food manufacturers find helps to enhance the marketability of their products.”
Kosherfest 2010 (www.kosherfest), Oct 26-27 at the NJ Meadowlands, reflects the trends, tastes, flavors and pulse of the kosher market as it goes into 2011. The sold out show will feature more than 350 exhibitors, and hundreds of new products from all over the world and from companies big and small, and old and new. This year CANADA will be the featured country, with a special section at the show as well as events from that country dedicated to everything Canadian and kosher.
