Newark, New Jersey's Oldest School Receives Green Cleaning Thanks To Planned Companies

Planned associates give back to community; revitalize Newark's Lafayette Street School with a thorough Eco-friendly cleaning

Planned Companies, a leader in the janitorial/maintenance, concierge/doorman and security services industry since 1898, is pleased to announce the success of its Green Cleaning initiative at the Lafayette Street School in Newark, New Jersey.

On January 26, approximately 30 Planned associates participated in a day-long rejuvenation project at the Lafayette Street School in Newark, New Jersey. Using environmentally sensitive cleaning products, Rob Francis LEED AP, president and CEO, Astrit 'Tony' Gorana LEED AP, executive vice president of Building Services, and 28 other Planned Company associates "green cleaned" the school in an effort to give back and help a community that has provided the Company with many opportunities. The volunteers divided into four teams of six and cleaned four floors of the School, which included classrooms, hallways and the auditorium.

"We feel it is important to give something positive back both to the City that has supported us over the years, and to the people of New Jersey who have facilitated the growth of our real estate service business for four generations," Mr. Francis stated. "We started as window cleaners and janitors in this great city of Newark and went on to build one of the largest janitorial, maintenance, security and concierge service organizations in the Northeast. Philanthropic endeavors like this have become part of our culture at Planned and we look forward to working on similar projects in the future. On behalf of Planned Companies, I'd like to thank everyone who was involved with this initiative as it truly makes a difference to the community."

Established in Newark in 1898, Planned Companies launched its "Go Green" initiative in October 2008, after receiving feedback from customers who were concerned with the health of their environment. Since then, the Company has implemented new cleaning systems and products in most of the buildings it serves, and many associates have received their Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. This is the second green cleaning initiative Planned has participated in. On October 11, 2008, the Company donated its time and services through New Jersey Cares at the Sussex Avenue School of Arts and Sciences located at 307 Sussex Avenue in Newark, New Jersey.

"The importance of using green cleaning products, and using them correctly, is imperative in today's world," explained Mr. Gorana. "We are reinforcing, without compromise, Planned's core values by using less toxic, non-corrosive, biodegradable cleaning products that will improve the surroundings and address the environmental concerns shared by our Company, clients and the community. Green cleaning products and equipment can enhance the quality of life for not only the teachers and students, but for our clients as well, and we are pleased to have been able to work with the Lafayette Street School to help provide a safer, cleaner working atmosphere."

The Lafayette Street School opened its doors in 1848 and has become one of the oldest, continually operated schools in New Jersey. The school consists of four buildings and the main building boasts its original Tiffany windows in the auditorium. The school is home to approximately 1,045 students and offers education for pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade level.

"We understand the importance of green cleaning here at Lafayette Street School as we have already established a green cleaning program throughout the district," said Maria Merlo, principal of Lafayette Street School for the last eight years. "Not only are the custodians working side-by-side with the Planned Companies' team, but our teachers and staff continuously educate the students about the benefits of Eco-friendly products, and how they enhance a learning environment. We are excited to be a part of this wonderful initiative and are grateful to Planned Companies for its charitable efforts."
