Meeting 12-20-11 Polio Plus, Rotary International’s main project, was the subject of a presentation by Dr. James R. Cole, a member of the Englewood Rotary Club and District 7490 Chair of the Polio Plus Foundation. One might say it is a thankless job travelling from club to club and explaining the need for funds for Polio Plus, but to Jim Cole, his reward is in the results. Due to the efforts of Polio Plus Foundation leaders, Rotary is an inch away from eradicating Polio worldwide. If they raise enough funds, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will more than match the contributions.
Dr. Cole arrived at the club meeting, held at Doctor’s Express, with full gear to show an interesting DVD presentation of how hard the volunteers have worked and how much success they have achieved worldwide. It wasn’t a tearjerker presentation, but facts about the progress along with clips of people that needed the 2 drops of immunization as well as people that have been afflicted with the dreaded disease.
In other club business, President Gary Spivak mentioned the 50/50 that the club is holding, a book of six for $50.00 with the drawing on January 24th. The club is also having a Holiday Caribbean Party at Boomerang’s in Hackensack. Plans were made to switch the annual Fashion Show to Bergen Community College and work in conjunction with the Bergen Community College Rotary Club. The fundraiser will be held in May, 2012.
Membership, an important part of growth for the Paramus Sunrise Rotary Club, is on the up rise with three members slated to join and several more waiting in the wings for the proper time. Anyone interested in joining this vibrant morning club can attend any Tuesday Morning meeting held at Doctors Express, 67C E. Ridgewood Avenue from 8 to 9 AM every Tuesday but the week of Xmas when the club has opted not to meet. Doctors Express is located across from Lord & Taylor and Fairway Market in the strip mall.
