Esteemed culinary student travels to the finals competition for a chance to jump-start culinary career
Last night at Johnson & Wales University - Providence, Geoffrey Lanez showcased his culinary talents to take home the winning title against some of the most talented culinary students in the region.
The judging panel, composed chef judges Chef Chris Damian of Legendary Restaurant Group, Chef Andy Husbands of Tremont 647, Chef Chris Coombs of DEUXAVE and DBAR, Chef Raymond Ost of SANDRINE’S BISTRO, and media judges Jennifer Che of Tiny Urban Kitchen, Jackie Bruno of NECN, Michael Prerau of The Food Monkey and Susan Holaday of Foodservice East awarded Geoffrey the coveted title and the once-in-a-lifetime chance to compete at the finals competition to be held at The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone, in Napa Valley, Calif., March 9-12, 2012.
The fast-paced, high-pressure cooking competition included five fellow culinary students representing Bunker Hill Community College, The Cambridge School of Culinary Arts, Johnson & Wales University – Providence, Southern New Hampshire University, Newbury College, and Southern Maine Community College. Geoffrey Lanez from Johnson & Wales University – Providence won the judges’ highest marks with his innovative signature dish recipe, Pan Seared Halibut with Pistachio Crust. The rigorous assessment and tasting from the judging panel took place during a tasting reception for local media, chefs and invited guests. Geoffrey was met with cheers and applause as he was crowned the New England Regional winner.
“Winning this competition means a lot to me. The opportunity to be mentored by top chefs in the Boston area was fantastic,” said Geoffrey. “They prepared me well for the Finals competition.”
In celebration of its 10th year, Geoffrey will join the nine past winners of the S.Pellegrino Almost Famous Chef Competition during the three-day finals event. Past winners will work alongside Geoffrey and the esteemed judging panel to mentor the 10 finalists throughout the three days of fierce competition. All finals competitors will be evaluated in three competition categories: the Mystery Basket, Signature Dish and People’s Choice.
The intense weekend will culminate with the announcement of the 2012 S.Pellegrino Almost Famous Chef. This event will be broadcast live via the Almost Famous Chef Competition Facebook fan page, where viewers can vote for their favorite competitor and ask questions of the celebrity chef panel as they watch all the excitement unfold. The overall winner will take the title, up to $22,000 in prizes and a career-changing apprenticeship with a master chef.
