Hackensack University Medical Center is deeply saddened to announce the loss of Peter I. Praeger, M.D., co-chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Heart & Vascular Hospital. Unfortunately, Dr. Praeger passed away early this morning.
“This is a very sad day for HackensackUMC. Dr. Praeger, a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, dedicated his life to health and wellness. He treated and saved countless patients’ lives. Dr. Praeger was aptly referred to as a miracle worker,” said Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer of Hackensack University Health Network. “Every day people placed their trust in Dr. Praeger. He treated, improved and saved countless patients’ lives for which we will be forever grateful. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to his family and patients. Our healthcare family will deeply miss him.”

Dr. Praeger’s contributions are numerous. Most recently, Dr. Praeger lead his team in the investigation and development of the Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) program at HackensackUMC’s Heart & Vascular Hospital. LVAD is known as a bridge to heart transplantation and recovery. This key program will continue as part of Dr. Praeger’s legacy, directly saving lives of heart failure patients.
