On 11/16/2012 at approximately 1:52 am, Paramus Officer Daniel DeRienzo observed a Honda Accord traveling Route 17 North near Midland Ave at a high rate of speed. Officer DeRienzo observed the vehicle swerve several times, almost colliding with other vehicles. The officer was able to stop the vehicle north of Ridgewood Ave, utilizing his emergency lights and siren. Upon conversing with the driver, later identified as 44 year old Alex Vivien of Mahwah, he suspected that he was under the influence of intoxicating liquors or drugs.
After P.O. DeRienzo administered field sobriety testing, Mr. Vivien was placed under arrest for Driving While Intoxicated. He was transported to Paramus Police Headquarters for breath testing. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, refusal to submit to breath testing, and several other motor vehicle violations. He was later released to a sober adult pending court appearance.
