Bedbug expert Michael Colongione and Pronto Plus offer tips for travelers. Ready or not, the holiday season is upon us. With many people soon traveling to spend quality time with family and friends or to escape the cold weather with an end-of-year getaway, consumers face a heightened risk of bringing home unwanted houseguests – bedbugs.
“The holiday season always brings increased travel, and regardless of the destination or mode of transportation, bedbugs are a cause for concern for many people,” says Michael Colongione, president of GotchA! Bedbug Inspectors. “The holidays can be hectic enough without worrying about the possibility of a bedbug infestation. Just a few minutes of preparation and several simple steps can offer travelers peace of mind and alleviate any unnecessary worry when it comes to the pests.”
Whether you are staying with loved ones or checking into a hotel during a holiday trip, bedbugs are crafty hitchhikers that can find their way into your belongings en route to your destination. Colongione offers these simple tips to help prevent a potential bedbug infestation before, during and after your travels.
Before You Go:
? Prior to making a hotel reservation, research hotel bedbug registries to investigate recently reported infestations.
? Before packing, protect your luggage with a certified bedbug spray such as Pronto Plus that kills bedbugs and their eggs on contact, using as directed. Consider purchasing the carry on-approved 3-oz. Pronto Plus spray for use during your trip.
? Pack clothing in sealed luggage liners and smaller items in plastic zip-up bags to prevent bedbug access.
? When traveling by automobile, place all gifts within a garbage bag or a sealed bin. Transport in the trunk if possible, where there’s less upholstery where bed bugs like to hide.
When You Arrive:
? While uncommon, it’s possible for bedbugs to infest vehicles. Inspect rental cars for signs of bed bugs including bloodstains, droppings and eggs and spray with Pronto Plus as a precaution.
? Complete a thorough inspection of your room by checking mattress seams, bedding, pillowcases, upholstered furniture, baseboards, electrical outlets, telephones, clocks and smoke detectors. While searching your room, be on the lookout for the telltale signs of bedbug presence mentioned above as well as the bugs themselves.
? Keep your bags on luggage racks and away from beds, off the floor and out of closets – places where bedbugs are typically found.
Upon Your Return:
? Inspect your luggage and its contents for any visible sightings of bedbugs, and spray with Pronto Plus before storing bags away.
? Wash your clothes in hot water and/or dry on high. Send delicate items or clothes that tend to color-bleed to the dry cleaner.
“Taking these extra steps will enhance consumers’ chances of avoiding unwanted travel companions during the holidays,” Colongione continues. “This will ultimately allow for a more enjoyable, stress-free holiday season and a happy, bedbug-free New Year.”
