This afternoon, Vice President Joe Biden had lunch with middle class Americans - including MomsRising member Ruthie Poole - who would see their income taxes go up if Congress fails to act to extend the middle class tax cuts during fiscal cliff budget negotiations. They discussed the importance of extending income tax cuts for 98% of Americans and 97% of small businesses as well as ending the Bush era tax breaks for the wealthy.
At the meeting, MomsRising member Ruthie Poole, from Malden, Massachusetts presented stories of women, mothers and their families from all over the that documented their struggles as they face the impending fiscal cliff. Mrs. Poole told the Vice President that as a mother of two teenage boys, who works at a small non-profit and is the wife of a small business owner her family is struggling to make ends meet.
This comes days after moms and their families took action to make the voices of their over million members heard. While members of Congress were negotiating a budget on Wednesday, December 5th women, mothers and their families visited Capitol Hill to deliver those stories and signatures, and to ensure that families’ voices were heard in the negotiations. MomsRising members are also making over 190 deliveries of the short book of fiscal cliff stories to the in-district offices of their local representatives in more than 40 states.
“We thank Vice President Joe Biden for listening to our stories. If Congress doesn’t act, massive across-the-board cuts could cost millions of jobs and hurt health care, education, aid to state and local governments, and vital programs that kids and families depend on, such as Head Start, child care, and food safety,” said Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, executive director and co-founder of MomsRising. “Even worse, some lawmakers are trying to use this high-stakes moment of legislative complexity as an opportunity to attempt to sneak in drastic cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Women and mothers are urging their representatives in Congress not to throw America’s families over the fiscal cliff in order to protect tax cuts for the top two percent among us."
