Newark Museum Celebrates Freedom and Community on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

- In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, on January 21 from 1-4:30 pm the Newark Museum will mark the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation through community service, musical performance, film, hands-on workshops and gallery games suitable for the entire family. All activities are free with suggested Museum admission.

Art and science workshops will be held throughout the event and will explore the themes of community and freedom. The workshops include Silhouette Stories inspired by the work of Kara Walker; Freedom Jewel inspired by Josiah Wedgewood's Emancipation Cameo; Chain Link Prints inspired by Melvin Edwards' Working in New Jersey; and Feathers for Flight, which investigates the science of feathers under a microscope.
Additional activities include:
Gallery Games: Civil Right Bingo, a Newark Museum tradition
Community Service: Children participate in a make-and-sell workshop with all proceeds donated to Governor Christie’s Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund.
Planetarium Shows: Legends of the Night Sky will be shown at 1 & 3 pm; and Tales of the Maya Skies at 2 & 4 pm.
Special Events:
-Live stream of President Barack Obama’s Second Inauguration, noon.
- Screenings of Dr. King’s I Have a Dream Speech at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 pm.
- Performance: North Jersey Philharmonic Glee Club, 3 pm.
