The petition on SignOn.org was started by former news producer-turned organizer Maria Roach and her organization United for Change USA. The petition was created in response to the announcement of a Gun Appreciation Day earlier this week, and in just one day, more than 23,000 people have joined Maria & United for Change USA in urging the National Rifle Association to condemn the event.

“In the days following the Sandy Hook shooting tragedy, the NRA offered no reasonable solutions for our national gun violence crisis. And now, a coalition of gun groups have organized a day to honor guns the same weekend that Americans celebrate the life and service of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., an American leader who was assassinated by a rifle's bullet,” said Maria Roach. “This event is a callous power play by the gun lobby and Americans have had enough.”
So far, the NRA has not joined the Gun Appreciation Day Coalition, which includes the Second Amendment Foundation, Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, Special Operations Speaks, Revolution PAC, Citizens and Country, Social Security Institute, Committee to Draft Judge Andrew Napolitano, Conservative Action Alerts, Women Warriors PAC, and Conservative Action Fund and Political Media, Inc.
