Forecast the Facts applauds the House of Representatives’ belated passage of $50 billion to support the victims of Superstorm Sandy and to improve infrastructure for future, fossil-fueled disasters. Thousands of Forecast the Facts members signed a petition urging Congress to support investment in resilience against future climate disasters, and hundreds of them made calls to Congressional offices leading up to Tuesday’s vote. The House voted 241-180 <http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2013/roll023.xml> for H.R. 152, overcoming broad Republican opposition. Only 49 Republicans, mostly from the Northeast, voted for final passage. One Democrat, Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN), voted against.
“Survivors of Superstorm Sandy are finally seeing some compassion from Congress, more than 80 days after it devastated huge swaths of our nation,” said Brad Johnson, campaign manager of Forecast the Facts. “We honor the 49 Republicans brave enough to overcome the stranglehold that New York-based carbon billionaire David Koch has over the modern Republican Party. Thankfully, enough members of Congress chose to side with the victims of fossil-fueled devastation over the very polluters who are making our weather more dangerous. The time is now for our leaders to protect our nation from the crisis of climate change.”
