Statement by Garlin Gilchrist II, Campaign Director of MoveOn.org:

"The plan laid out by the White House today is the most sweeping proposal in decades to reduce gun violence and make our communities, schools and streets safer. We know powerful special interest groups like the National Rife Association will try to erect a multi-million dollar firewall to block these reforms from passing. MoveOn members in every state and every congressional district are ready to stand up to the NRA and demand that Congress take action to reduce gun violence. Elected officials in Washington can no longer afford to sit back and wait for the next tragedy and issue hollow statements of sympathy. The time to act is now and MoveOn members from coast to coast will be demanding action from all levels of government."
As the next step in MoveOn's campaign to demand action on gun violence, MoveOn members will be meeting on Thursday at more than 230 community events across the nation to discuss ways to reduce violence in their neighborhoods and urge swift action from state, local and national decision makers.
